Dam removal

A last resort measure when damming by beavers causes negative impact due to water level changes, is removing the dam. This measure may require a permit, and it is important to consider that the dam may be rebuilt.

If all other methods fail, removing a beaver dam completely may be necessary. Whether this is allowed and if a permit is required can vary by country, region or province. If the dam affects the function of a lodge or burrow, legislation may change. It is important to check with the relevant authority before proceeding.

Persistent beavers

A dam can be removed using a rake, pitchfork, or excavator (Figure 1). Beavers usually respond by rebuilding the dam. To reduce the chance of immediate reconstruction it is important not to leave the removed dam material on the shore but to completely remove all material from the site.

There are cases where beavers persistently rebuild dams, sometimes in locations causing even more damage. Alternative solutions to removing the dam are therefore preferable.
